Fought in the closing months of the war, the Battle of Manila was an attempt by Allied forces to liberate the city from Japanese occupation and turned into one of the most destructive of the entire war. Dubbed “the Stalingrad of Asia”, the battle saw over 250,000 killed, with over 100,000 of those civilians, mass murdered by Japanese forces, while many were also killed by American firepower. The battle caused the Filipino capital to become one of the most devastated in the course of the Great War.
