    Wednesday, 5 March 2025, marks the formal establishment of the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (the GRAI) which is now operational. The GRAI has been preparing for this important milestone for some time. While the Gambling Regulation Act, 2024, which provides for its establishment, was only passed into last law October, Ms Ann Marie Caulfield was appointed as CEO designate to the nascent GRAI in September 2022.

    Independent law firm A&L Goodbody has appointed five new partners, including four in Dublin and one in Belfast. Clare Carroll and Stephen King have been appointed as partners in the firm's technology group while Denise Daly Byrne becomes a partner in disputes & investigations. Siobhan Kearney has been promoted in construction & engineering, and Belfast-based Catherine Irvine has been made partner in corporate and M&A. Carroll recently joined A&L Goodbody from McCann FitzGerald.

    With the Irish parliament now in summer recess, it is likely that we will have a few months to wait for the enactment of the Gambling Regulation Bill. With an election on the horizon, potentially as early as Q4 2024, time is getting tight to get the Bill across the line within the lifetime of the current Government. There are, however, a number of promising signals that this important regulatory reform remains a high priority agenda item.
