(WIVB) — Acting Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon announced Thursday night that the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency voted to deny a request for loan forgiveness from the former Braymiller Market. After opening in 2021, the Braymiller Market received $561,000 in COVID-19 relief funds in 2023. As part of the loan, the market was required to meet a certain employment threshold and stay open for two years after being granted the money — but it closed in December 2024.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Acting Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon shared his plans to increase property taxes, instill an occupancy tax for hotels and called for more state funding on Tuesday at a joint budget hearing in Albany. The increase is one way Scanlon is proposing to close the gap on the city’s $40 million budget shortfall. Property taxes will increase, Scanlon said, although he did not provide any hard numbers or how soon the increase would be implemented.

TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. — The Town of Tonawanda announced Monday night its recognition of Nov. 19 as “Anita Alvarez Day” to honor the 2024 Summer Olympic silver medalist as she prepares to join the U.S. Air Force. Anita secured second place in artistic swimming back in August during the Paris Olympics. The win marked the first U.S. medal in the sport since 2004.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — In a “veto message” sent to the Buffalo Common Council Friday, Mayor Byron Brown is shutting down the council’s proposal to change city budget deadlines. The decision comes just before the council returns from its summer recess. The council wanted to amend the city’s charter to bump up the mayor’s submission deadline from May 1 to April 8. The local law would have also extended the council’s deadline to approve the budget from May 22 to May 26.
