Police recover more than 200 firearms in six months

The SAPS recently announced that in the span of six months it recovered over 200 illegal firearms throughout the metro. Tshwane District Police Service recovered and removed 239 unlicensed firearms between October 1, 2024, and March 31 this year. The recoveries were a joint effort across all 36 police stations in Tshwane. Spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said it was a significant step forward towards fighting violent crime in the metro, as firearms are go-to instruments for criminals.
Operation Shanela nets 350 in Laudium and Pretoria West

Liquor establishments were shut down and drug dealers nabbed as the SAPS arrested 350 suspects for various offences during Operation Shanela in Laudium and Pretoria West on February 26. The multidisciplinary operation took place under the leadership of Major-General Samuel Thine, district commissioner of Tshwane. The National Zoological Garden (NZG) in Pretoria is at the forefront of global efforts to combat species extinction and reaffirmed its commitment on Reverse the Red Day, February 7. This annual global initiative aims to reverse the decline of endangered species and ecosystems through strategic action and collaboration. NZG spokesperson Nontsikelelo Mpulo said this mission is critical, as 15% of the species housed at the zoo are classified as threatened.
City bleeds over R1m to illegal connections in Sunnyside

The metro discovered 67 tampered meters in Sunnyside over roughly seven days during a recent by-law operation. According to Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya, the illegal activities involving stealing of electricity have cost the metro over R1-million. Since the start of the year, the metro has undertaken weekly by-law operations to address rampant lawlessness in and around the CBD and other parts of the metro under the operation dubbed “Reclaim Our City”.
Three arrested in hijacked vehicle in Central

Three suspects believed to be linked to several hijacking cases in Pretoria were arrested recently in the CBD. The three men were arrested whilst driving a stolen VW GTI and were in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Provincial police members arrested the trio on January 14. Over 100 runners braved the wet weather to participate in a weekend road or trail run at Irene Athletics Clubhouse hosted by Revolution Trails. This was the fifth run of the year at the Clubhouse so far while Revolution Trails has been holding its weekly races around the metro and beyond. Irene Estate has also been a favourite for Revolution Trails since October 2020.
Centurion church hosts first Om die Drop race

The Pierre van Ryneveld Geloofsfamilie hosted its first annual Om Die Drop Run this past weekend in Centurion. The race welcomed over 1 400 runners to the different distances offered. Partnering organisations involved in the race included Mad Monkey Adventures, Athletics Gauteng North, Irene Athletics Club, Seek Security, Discovery Vitality, aQuelle, Oasis and many more. Participants could run the 5km, 10 km or 21.1km distance.
R500k drugs recovered on N14 during weekend

Pretoria Central police recently arrested two suspects after they were caught with over 200kg of drugs this past weekend. The arrest took place on January 11 at around 15:00 during a roadblock near Kgosi Mampuru Prison on the N14. Pretoria Central police members, the TMPD, crime prevention wardens and patrollers were alerted via a tip-off that a vehicle may be transporting drugs via the route.
Laudium, Atteridgeville reservoirs scheduled to be shut off this week

Residents of Laudium and Atteridgeville may be without water for nine hours this week as the metro plans to connect a 500mm pipe along the system on January 15. In a recent statement, the Tshwane metro said the work is scheduled from 08:00-17:00. “The scope of work to be carried out includes the reconnection of the existing 500mm to the Atteridgeville HL Reservoir, while the new 700 mm diameter pipe will supply the Laudium Reservoir.
