The SAPS recently announced that in the span of six months it recovered over 200 illegal firearms throughout the metro. Tshwane District Police Service recovered and removed 239 unlicensed firearms between October 1, 2024, and March 31 this year. The recoveries were a joint effort across all 36 police stations in Tshwane. Spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said it was a significant step forward towards fighting violent crime in the metro, as firearms are go-to instruments for criminals.

Liquor establishments were shut down and drug dealers nabbed as the SAPS arrested 350 suspects for various offences during Operation Shanela in Laudium and Pretoria West on February 26. The multidisciplinary operation took place under the leadership of Major-General Samuel Thine, district commissioner of Tshwane. The focus was on key priorities, such as removing unlicensed firearms, arresting wanted suspects, and enforcing liquor licence compliance.

The National Zoological Garden (NZG) in Pretoria is at the forefront of global efforts to combat species extinction and reaffirmed its commitment on Reverse the Red Day, February 7. This annual global initiative aims to reverse the decline of endangered species and ecosystems through strategic action and collaboration. NZG spokesperson Nontsikelelo Mpulo said this mission is critical, as 15% of the species housed at the zoo are classified as threatened.

The metro discovered 67 tampered meters in Sunnyside over roughly seven days during a recent by-law operation. According to Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya, the illegal activities involving stealing of electricity have cost the metro over R1-million. Since the start of the year, the metro has undertaken weekly by-law operations to address rampant lawlessness in and around the CBD and other parts of the metro under the operation dubbed “Reclaim Our City”.

Three suspects believed to be linked to several hijacking cases in Pretoria were arrested recently in the CBD. The three men were arrested whilst driving a stolen VW GTI and were in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Provincial police members arrested the trio on January 14.
