    FALL RIVER, Mass. — A Fall River man will serve time in state prison after his conviction for trying to rape woman who was out walking on Quequechan Rail Trail in 2022, the district attorney said Friday. Paulo Silva, 28, was sentenced Friday morning to serve 4.5 to 5.5 years in state prison, to be followed by probation for 2 years, Bristol Count District Attorney Thomas Quinn said in a statement. Prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence of 7 to 12 years followed by probation.

    AUGUSTA, Maine — An investigation is underway after Maine’s first official comfort dog, Baxter, was found dead inside a state vehicle, officials said Friday. Baxter’s death was “accidental,” the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a statement. Baxter, a three-year-old chocolate lab, joined the Maine Bureau of Emergency Communications in 2022 as the state’s first official comfort dog, officials said.

    BOSTON — A physician employed at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bedford has been indicted on child pornography charges, the U.S. Attorney said Thursday. Sven Knudsen Ljaamo, 70, was indicted on one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said in a statement. Ljaamo was arrested and charged by criminal complaint on April 23. He was subsequently released on conditions after a detention hearing.
