Farmers markets on Vancouver Island are seeing an increase in attendance this season amidst a push to support local businesses. Mother’s Day was the first day of operations at Cedar Farmer’s Market just outside Nanaimo, where executive director Kate Poirier said it was close to the busiest opening day they’ve ever had. She said they saw about 3,500 people enter the grounds this year, which is around the same as last year’s record-breaking number. “It was absolutely incredible,” she said.

No. 4 Road between Alderbridge Way and Westminster Highway is closed on Friday morning (May 9), according to Richmond RCMP. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes. This is the section of No. 4 Road between Garden City Lands and the Department of National Defence lands. Richmond residents will once again have the opportunity to learn out about the city’s sewers, water system, roads and parks. On Saturday, May 10, the City of Richmond will host its annual free Public Works Open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the city’s Operations Yard at 5599 Lynas Lane.
