Ah, Valentine’s Day: a beautiful, wholesome holiday where we all get together to celebrate love in all of its forms. Pink hearts, lovebirds, cheesy cards, overly expensive dates, the whole nine yards. Originally a Christian Feast Day, celebrating one of three Saint Valentines which nobody can seemingly agree on, it has grown to be a worldwide holiday to purchase lots and lots of pink stuff. I struggle with Valentine’s Day, personally.

In January of 2024, much of the West Coast faced an intense winter storm that blanketed the City of Portland in snow and ice. According to an article by Noelle Crombie with OregonLive, the freeze covered the city in around 1-3 inches of snow, plunging temperatures below freezing for about a week and bringing the city to a halt as roads and sidewalks iced over. I was a naive Californian who had only lived in the city for a few months before the storm.

For most of my life, the prospect of the world ending has been a lingering fear in the back of my mind. The thought is nearly impossible to escape. From our media to our education system, it’s becoming common knowledge that existence as we know it is ending. Of course, this fear is not irrational—I’ve taken a biology class. I know the parts-per-million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached uncontrollable levels, consistently breaking records.

Portland State University’s community has been pushing for widespread reforms. This struggle kicked into high gear at the outset of the latest bout of Israeli aggression towards Palestine, specifically the most recent invasion of the Gaza Strip. Students took particular issue with the relationship between PSU and Boeing, a company supplying bombs and weapons to Israel. One of the most notable demands by student activists is that PSU ultimately divest from companies with ties to the State of Israel.

A large mural framed by neon light and sculpted roses at the gallery entrance of Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Portland State (JSMA at PSU) immediately draws the eye. Underneath a bright open sign, a couple of old photos—which look straight out of a family photo album—are on display amid the otherwise alluringly synthetic scene. Labor of Love is currently on view at JSMA at PSU, an exhibition showcasing the works of numerous local and national contemporary artists.

Editor’s Note: Reaz Mahmood is the faculty advisor for Portland State Vanguard, and his opinions come from his experience. Student media and other student-run organizations at Portland State struggle to stay afloat due to delays in the Contract & Procurement Services (CAPS) office. In addition to the work of its editors, student media publications like Portland State Vanguard rely on paid contributors to write content.
