I fail to focus through the window as rain jet-washes our aircraft. Knuckles whiten on rosary beads as we aquaplane along the runway. Most deafening are the shrieks to my right, from my 88-year-old mother. More covert are the expletives coming from the window seat to her left. It’s a wet and wild welcome to Ireland, just as I recall when it was my mother holding my hand during hairy landings on family holidays to visit my Irish granny. Mum was born in Galway, and moved to London when she was 17.
