The bustling back-to-school season is often an exciting time as teachers and students prepare for a new academic year and return to their favorite fall activities. But this transitionary period can also be a stressful one, as people adopt new routines, join new school communities or establish new goals. For this reason, it’s important for teachers, students and families to focus on their well-being, especially given the rising mental health needs among young people nationally.

It was a hot summer day on June 6, 2019, when Kim Ford felt so incredibly hot that she couldn’t keep her clothes on. She was working from home in customer care when she tripped and couldn’t get up. Before she knew it, she was in an ambulance, heading to Christiana Hospital, where EMTs pointed to her husband’s wrist and asked her what was on it. She couldn’t answer them. Ford, who was 50 years old at the time, had what doctors described as a one-in-a-million stroke.

Every summer, the University of Delaware opens its doors to a different kind of student: Dozens of area high school students use the university as their home base as part of the nationally recognized Upward Bound program. For five weeks, students from high schools all over New Castle County gather to take courses, stay in dorms and discover new potential career paths as part of the program.

Margaret Armstrong, an undergraduate student at the University of Delaware, remembers sitting in her fiction writing class and hearing her professor tell the class there weren’t any restrictions on what the students could write. No topic was off limits. She also knows that aspiring writers in the early 20th century heard vastly different advice about how to be successful.
