HONOLULU (Island News) -- Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children is putting its union nurses on notice after receiving a strike notice from the the Hawaii Nurses Association (HNA). Hospital officials are threatening to lockout those nurses. "We never wanted it to come to this. HONOLULU (Island News) -- There was a passionate plea in court on Thursday from the family of a man murdered on Tantalus. They asked the judge to lock up Nainoa Damon for the rest of his life. Haaheo Kolona was only 18, a senior at Saint Louis School, when he was murdered by Damon on Round Top Drive on March 18, 2022. It was a senseless shooting that changed some young lives forever as well as the lives of their families.

MAUI COUNTY, Hawaii (Island News) -- Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some wear uniforms. Others are everyday people. There were a lot of heroes on Aug. 8, 2023, who helped save lives and homes. And some are still working to help others recover and rebuild. While there are some signs of progress, Lahaina is still mostly unrecognizable one year later. The emotional scars are also still raw. "Yeah, just seeing it, it still doesn't seem real," said Lahaina resident Tamia Duldulao-Kahaialii.

KULA, Hawaii (Island News) -- On the slopes of Haleakala, 13 miles from Kahului, you'll find Kula in Upcountry Maui. "Kula is a very unique place," said Kula resident Tom Liu. "The uniqueness is of course the view, the fresh air."Kula is rustic, agricultural, and cool. In fact, many homes have fireplaces and chimneys. But now the beautiful countryside has burn scars in areas that used to be lush with vegetation. On Aug. 8, 2023, a wildfire roared into Kula and broke the peace.
