It was Thursday yesterday, and I was greeted by four different people with the new slang for Thor’s Day: “Happy Friday eve!”That is all I heard throughout the day. Since when did Thursday become Friday eve? Have we become so eager to launch the weekend that we have mentally eliminated Thursday’s existence? Have we decided to live in our future rather than our present? Have we become accustomed to fast-forwarding our way through life? Thursday is its own, and it deserves respect.

En los agitados tiempos de suspensión parcial de labores a la que se orilló al Poder Judicial de la Federación, no dejo de pensar en la caza de brujas que comenzó en la edad media y tuvo su auge en la edad moderna. Debo confesar que siempre he tenido cierta fascinación por el mundo de fantasía de brujas y magos, por lo que en algunas ocasiones he expresado —con un poco de vanidad— que de haber vivido en aquella época… hubiera sido quemada en la hoguera.

I am in the upstairs section of a nearby library. I am writing next week’s lesson plan, creating and uploading a Canvas page, responding to another teacher’s email (from Friday), sending follow-up emails to my seniors, and sharing content with my colleagues. When I send one of my colleagues my “team” contribution, she reminds me to enjoy my weekend. I respond: “Just a few more minutes, and I’ll be done.”It took me about 90 minutes to complete my work for the upcoming week.

Making sacrifices in our personal lives due to our careers and jobs is something adults are all too familiar with. We find ourselves missing out on our children’s games, performances, banquets, ceremonies, and many other important milestones. However, we often forget that they, too, make sacrifices when they follow our workaholic lead and make the choice of placing their jobs before their personal and social lives. Watching them whittle away their primary commodity — time — hurts us.

AbstractWarming shifts the thermal optimum of net photosynthesis (ToptA) to higher temperatures. However, our knowledge of this shift is mainly derived from seedlings grown in greenhouses under ambient atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) conditions. It is unclear whether shifts in ToptA of field-grown trees will keep pace with the temperatures predicted for the 21st century under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations.
