The Daily Nexus

The Daily Nexus serves as the campus newspaper for the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The origins of the Daily Nexus date back to the 1930s with the Santa Barbara State College student newspaper known as The Eagle. After the college joined the UC system in 1944, The Eagle transformed through various titles, including The Roadrunner, El Gaucho, The University Post, and The Daily Gaucho. The contemporary Daily Nexus was shaped by the activism and social movements of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1970, in response to significant events, including the burning of the Bank of America building in nearby Isla Vista, the newspaper's editors decided to rename it to Daily Nexus, reflecting the evolving spirit of the university. The 1970-71 editorial team was motivated by the words of Robert Maynard Hutchins, who said, "A free press is the nexus of any democracy."
