The bill in the Indiana Legislature that would allow a hospital merger effort in Vigo County to continue passed a House committee Tuesday by a vote of 10-1. The bill was authored by Sen. A Yale University economist contends the proposed merger of Union Health and Terre Haute Regional Hospital would not be good for consumers. Zack Cooper, an associate professor at Yale and the director of the university's Tobin Center for Economic Policy, in a news release sent Tuesday contends the merger would raise commercial health care prices of the two entities 10% to 30%, raise local insurance premiums by 3% to 10%, and lower nurses’ wages by approximately 5%.

Indiana's lieutenant governor on social media Wednesday decided to use Terre Haute as an example in the Gov. Mike Braun administration's efforts to cut state property taxes and, apparently, downplay cries from local government units that argue cuts will hurt cities. A Miami, Florida, man was arrested after a shooting about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday in the Richland Manor subdivision in southern Vigo County that involved two physicians. Andre Uche Obua, 28, of Miami, was booked on charges of attempted murder, criminal recklessness, strangulation and burglary. Homeowner Manish Gera, 54, told investigating sheriff's deputies he had just arrived home and noticed a vehicle follow him into his driveway.

The Wabash Valley prepared Friday for the first major winter storm of the season, which is expected to arrive Sunday morning and intensify Sunday night and into Monday. In a winter storm watch, the National Weather Service said heavy wintry precipitation is expected with a high probability for significant amounts of snow — 6 inches or more. One Indiana Department of Transportation posting included the Terre Haute area in a band along Interstate 70 at risk for 8 to 10 inches of snow.

Shane Meehan, the Terre Haute man charged with killing Greg Ferency, a city police detective and FBI Task Force agent, has been found incompetent to stand trial on the federal charges against him, including murder. Meehan does not go free. Instead, he has been placed in the custody of the U.S. attorney general. He will be held for treatment in a secure mental health hospital for up to four months. That hospitalization may be extended until his mental condition is improved, the court held on Monday.
