SULLIVAN — A Sullivan County jury on Wednesday convicted the first defendant in the killing of Lowell Badger, an 85-year-old retired farmer found shot to death in his Sullivan County home in December 2012. William Ray Grimes, 39, of Merom, was convicted on all counts: murder, burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary. TERRE HAUTE — With a public comment session hosted by the state’s health department set for Thursday evening at Ivy Tech Community College, Union Health on Tuesday issued a statement arguing its case for a merger of Union and Terre Haute Regional hospitals. TERRE HAUTE — The 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to murder in the fatal shooting of a Terre Haute teenage girl in July 2021 was sentenced Thursday morning to 45 years in prison. Montez Ellington Jr. had accepted that sentence as part of a plea agreement struck in late March. Montez Ellington Jr. had accepted that sentence as part of a plea agreement struck in late March. He will receive credit for just over 1,375 days in actual custody. Chloe Carroll, 15, was killed July 23, 2021.

The bill in the Indiana Legislature that would allow a hospital merger effort in Vigo County to continue passed a House committee Tuesday by a vote of 10-1. The bill was authored by Sen. A Yale University economist contends the proposed merger of Union Health and Terre Haute Regional Hospital would not be good for consumers. Zack Cooper, an associate professor at Yale and the director of the university's Tobin Center for Economic Policy, in a news release sent Tuesday contends the merger would raise commercial health care prices of the two entities 10% to 30%, raise local insurance premiums by 3% to 10%, and lower nurses’ wages by approximately 5%.
