There was a time not long ago when the human body—any human body—was out of fashion, at least in the art world. In 2014, New York magazine critic Jerry Saltz wrote a withering indictment of the abstract, decorator-friendly, and ultimately banal style he described as “Zombie Formalism,” which seemed to be suddenly everywhere. At that time, in the mid-aughts, perhaps the most controversial thing an artist could do was to simply depict real figures of any kind, particularly people.

구찌가 후원하는 ‘LACMA 아트+필름 갈라’가 올해로 13회를 맞았습니다. 로스앤젤레스 카운티 뮤지엄에서 열리는 이 행사는 매년 문화 예술계 인물을 선정해 그들의 업적을 조명해왔는데요. 올해 주인공은 흑인 여성 최초로 베니스 비엔날레 황금사자상을 수상한 ‘시몬 리’ 작가와 뮤지컬 영화의 거장 ‘바즈 루어만’ 감독이었습니다. 오후 6시부터 도착하기 시작한 게스트를 맞이한 것은 로스앤젤레스의 낭만적인 석양, 그리고 ‘피스타치오 그린’ 컬러의 카펫이었습니다. 카펫은 LACMA를 상징하는 크리스 버든의 작품 ‘Urban Light’를 기점으로 대표적인 미니멀리스트 건축가 페터 춤토르가 짓고 있는 신관까지 쭉 이어져 있었죠.페터 춤토르가 미국에서 선보이는 최초의 건물인 신관은 2026년 4월 공개됩니다. 한편 이번 갈라에는 총 640만 달러의 후원금이 모였습니다. 후원금은 LACMA의 디렉터 마이클 고반의 ‘편견 없고 다채로운’ 큐레이션 활동에 모두 쓰입니다.

El filántropo Bryan Stevenson presentó en el escenario a Simone Leigh, la escultora cuya primera exposición ya fue inaugurada en el LACMA y estará hasta el 20 de enero, y nos contó que había viajado a Venecia por primera vez en su vida para ver su exposición en la Bienal de 2022. Con éxito que le llegó de la noche a la mañana, Leigh miró a la sala y comentó: “Este momento me recuerda cuando mi hija llegó del colegio y me dijo que sus amigas pensaban que yo era cool”.
