The Reserve Bank has held the Official Cash Rate at 5.5 percent. The move is in line with what many economists predicted. In a statement the Reserve Bank said the New Zealand economy had evolved broadly and core inflation and most measures of inflation had declined. The bank said the risks to the inflation outlook were now more balanced. "Restrictive monetary policy and lower global growth have contributed to aggregate demand slowing to better match the supply capacity of the New Zealand economy.

The pair were travelling on a utility-terrain vehicle (UTV) with four other people around their grandmother's farm when, according to a post on social media, they crashed into a boulder and rolled into a water hole at Waikainga Stream.

If you stand on the beach at Kirra on the Gold Coast and look north, in the distance you can see the high-rise towers of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. Kirra Beach is at the southern end of the Gold Coast, around 20km away from its more famous neighbours, but it's a million miles away in terms of its vibe. It is a short beach that has a boardwalk running along it that people walk or cycle along.

Like much of 2023 the weather played its part as the year ticked over into 2024 in New Zealand. Many planned celebrations were dampened down by strong winds and rain, with some even being cancelled. It was a fitting end to a year that saw floods, cyclones and possibly the wettest winter in memory. Auckland saw in the New Year with its traditional fireworks from the top of Sky Tower, while Wellingtonians braved high winds and celebrated with a waterfront concert and fireworks.
