A 24-year-old former contestant on the BBC’s Race Around the World has died after a car crash in Manchester. Sam Gardiner, who appeared with his mother on the second series of popular series in 2020, rolled his car on the A4 near Manchester on the evening of May 26. He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries. Greater Manchester police said Gardiner’s car left the motorway in Gatley, Stockport, and ended up on its side. There was nobody else in the car.

The Russian captain of a container ship that crashed into a US oil tanker in the North Sea has denied killing a crew member. Vladimir Motin, 59, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter at the Old Bailey on Friday. Appearing via video link from HMP Hull, he spoke briefly via a Russian interpreter to confirm his identity before denying the charge.
