Nearly a decade ago, the death of a 41-year-old Anishinaabe man named Stacy DeBungee ignited a reckoning in Thunder Bay around long-simmering suspicions that municipal police officers were not adequately investigating the deaths of Indigenous people. Within hours of DeBungee’s body being pulled from the McIntyre River, the Thunder Bay Police Service had publicly stated his death appeared non-suspicious. There was no autopsy, no formal witness statements, no real investigation completed.

A soot-covered, seven-pound black bear cub, who captured the hearts of Manitobans after being rescued from the wildfire northeast of Lac du Bonnet, has died. The tiny bear suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to her paws, before she was brought to Black Bear Rescue Manitoba in Stonewall on Thursday evening. She was thought to have been alone for two days in the fire zone, separated from her mother, until a Manitoba Hydro sub-contractor found her alongside Wendigo Road.

The 3 a.m. phone call jolted Kaylan Rae awake. Kaylan normally wouldn’t have had his phone’s ringer on, but that night, May 24, 2023, he was on call at the water treatment plant. So when the phone rang, he was expecting to hear the voice of a co-worker. Instead, there was a man who identified himself as an RCMP officer. He was asking if Conor Rae was Kaylan’s son. With that confirmation, the officer said the 18-year-old had died — but that he couldn’t say how.
