NORFOLK, Va. — Thousands of people took to public transportation for the Norfolk Tides' home opener on the weekend of March 28. Limited parking due to ongoing construction on the future Norfolk casino meant people walked, rode the ferry, or took the light rail. According to the Norfolk Tides, 22,000 attended the opening weekend games. Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) leaders say many of them used public transportation to get to and from the game.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Fishermen from across the country will gather in Elizabeth City for a major bass fishing tournament this weekend. The Bassmaster Elite series will visit Elizabeth City’s Waterfront Park on Saturday and Sunday for the Hooked on the Harbor Festival. Live music, food trucks, and activities including a cornhole tournament will line Water Street all weekend. However, road and park closures begin Wednesday afternoon and continue through the weekend.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Shari Beasley says her daughter was "a bright light and we wanted to keep that bright light going." Beasley says Maylea's 5K Fun Run/Walk, held Saturday in Virginia Beach, honoring her late daughter, is bittersweet. "It’s hard, but seeing everybody come together in honor of her makes me happy," she explained. Maylea Beasley, a First Colonial High School graduate, was killed during her freshman year at James Madison University.

NORFOLK, Va. — FBI Special Agent David Desy works on the Violent Crimes Squad at Norfolk’s field office, specifically investigating child exploitation. He told 13News Now, "I deal with these cases fairly constantly, and the majority of parents are completely shocked. Children should be aware of the threat, and parents should be aware." That threat he’s referencing: sextortion. It’s a crime the FBI defines as coercing or threatening someone to send explicit images online.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Beer, wine, and pizza make up the simple menu at Bird Girl Bottle Shop in Newport News, but after less than two years in business, it’s quickly become a local favorite. "It was first a house," co-owner Derek Lapiska explained. "We had driven through the neighborhood and loved how all the houses were fun and small and quirky." Derek and Britt Lapiska moved into the Hilton neighborhood home, but it didn’t stay their residence for long.
