Countless more have been assaulted, emotionally tormented, harassed, coerced, financially abused and left to pick up the pieces, often with kids in tow. Despite the country's dismal record of domestic and family violence, the ongoing national crisis has been far from prominent in the major parties' campaigns.

Jamie Bennett always knew finding the right school and supports for her son Ari wouldn't be easy. She didn't expect to face "confusing and baffling" policies, nor to feel frustrated and left in the dark. The four-year-old, who loves dancing and rough-and-tumble play with his brothers, is Deafblind. "He is out to prove everyone wrong. I think he's very underestimated," Ms Bennett said.

The wait for Cyclone Alfred gave way to flood watch in Brisbane on Sunday as local creeks filled up and spilled over. Survival is something that was very much on Dave's mind when he and his family prepared for the worst. The Redland Bay resident recently had brain surgery, then found himself in the path of one of Queensland's most significant weather events in decades. Like many who hunkered down as Cyclone Alfred approached, he's now reflecting on the near miss they experienced. "We're just grateful that everyone survived," he said.

Cyclones are not something many Brisbane residents are familiar with, but Joy from Bray Park knows all about flooding. She's dealt with three floods since moving into her house in 1989. Last year was the worst. In January 2024, water gushed through the underside of her house after intense storms hit south-east Queensland. "We've had water in before, but not like that," she said.
