It was the South Australian police who took out an intervention order to protect *Mia and her son after her partner grabbed the sleeping boy and shoved her across the room. They were also involved when the father broke that order by assaulting her, then sped off with the then one-year-old in the car and threatened to drive into a tree. So, when the Federal Circuit and Family Court (FCFC) ordered the boy be put into his father's care, Mia was devastated.

Amber* had called emergency services after her daughter Megan* was mauled by a dog during a visit to her grandmother's house. During the six-minute call, the operator asks Amber if anyone else is with her. Amber says her sister Debbie* — who owns the dog — is present and verbally abusive.

Nic Pipkin was asked to provide a blood sample as part of the recruitment process as a fly-in, fly-out electrical contractor. He said he reluctantly consented to the test. "It was a prerequisite for the job … you either get the blood test or you don't get the job."His main concern was how his medical information would be used. "I just want to ensure that my bloods are used for the sole purpose of employment … not going onto some privatised database or used in a malicious way," he said.

Revenge and control are the drivers of male-perpetrated filicide, researchers say — but children murdered in their first year of life are more likely to be killed by their mother.
