TEMPLE, Texas — A spinning cloud formation seen over Bell and Milam counties on Wednesday turned some heads — but it wasn’t a tornado. The phenomenon looks more menacing than it is. What you saw across parts of Central Texas was a tropical funnel, which can form on humid days when storms get a slight, weak rotation within them. Tropical funnels form much higher up in the atmosphere than tornadoes and are smaller than tornadoes. They also typically have a weaker rotation and lower speeds.

TEMPLE, Texas — Parts of Central Texas saw isolated storms push through Wednesday morning as we await another round of severe weather. For Wednesday, some storms could be on the stronger side with a few capable of large hail and gusty winds as the main concerns. Additionally, as we add more rain to already saturated soils, we will continue to monitor the area for any flooding concerns. Temperatures should, once again, be in the lower to middle 80s under partly to mostly cloudy skies.

WACO, Texas — MEMORIAL DAY | Thunderstorms are set to impact parts of central Texas this morning as a cold front and associated line of storms moves south out of north Texas. Heavy rain is currently falling across Central Texas through the 7am hour and we will monitor a flooding threat as these storms continue. Storms should move across the area through about noon.

WACO, Texas — THURSDAY | A few showers moved across the area today, but nothing of much consequence. Otherwise, it was partly/mostly cloudy with highs in the 90's once again. Those few showers will be gone after sunset and we'll remain breezy and humid through the night. By daybreak, temperatures should fall into the upper 60's and lower 70's areawide. TOMORROW | WEATHER IMPACT ALERT | Another warm and humid day is on tap for Friday.

WACO, Texas — TODAY/TONIGHT | As of right now, I've got Waco topping out around 103° and Temple/Killeen around 104°. The record for May 14 is 96°, so we definitely expect that to fall. We've issued a WEATHER IMPACT ALERT Day for Wednesday, with the expectation of our FIRST 100° day of the year. Areas under the influence of Gulf moisture could see heat index values climb to the 105° to 110° range.
