AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Education Agency released the Spring 2025 STAAR results for grades 3 through 8 on Tuesday, highlighting a strong rebound in reading and language arts scores as well as improvements in other subjects. The assessments covered reading language arts (RLA) and math for grades 3–8, as well as science for grades 5 and 8, and social studies for grade 8. Statewide performance in RLA exceeded pre-pandemic levels for the first time, according to TEA.

KILLEEN, Texas — Earlier this year, students from Killeen ISD sent a special delivery to U.S. soldiers overseas, a collection of handwritten letters and artwork. Students from Meadows Elementary and Venable Village Elementary on Fort Cavazos, soon to be renamed Fort Hood, partnered with the Soldier and Family Readiness Group (SFRG) for the 1-44 Battalion, 69th ADA Brigade to send handwritten letters and creative artwork to deployed soldiers in the Middle East, according to the district.

BELL COUNTY, Texas — A high-tech DNA tool that acts like a vacuum is now in the hands of Central Texas investigators, and it could be the key to cracking cold cases. Local and state agencies are being trained this week on the M-Vac System, a DNA collection machine that uses a spray and suction method to extract more DNA from evidence, especially items that didn’t produce results using traditional swabs. "It works just like a carpet cleaner,” said Jared Bradley, President of M-Vac Systems.

BELTON, Texas — A Central Texas man is sitting in Bell County Jail for the death of 11-year-old Zoey Rene Walls, who died on July 2, 2023. Joshua Glenn Walls, 44, of Killeen, Texas, was brought into police custody after being located by the Bell County Sheriff's Violent Crimes Apprehension Team on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Walls faces charges of Criminally Negligent Homicide, according to the Bell County Sheriff's Office (BCSO).
