This story was originally performed at KUT's ATXplained Live at Bass Concert Hall on Oct. 23, 2024. Get tickets for our next show!Krista Reitz was born in Austin, but she didn't stay here. After her parents divorced, she moved around a lot. “I picked up and I moved and life was gone and the next phase happened,” she said. That made it hard to keep friends for very long. Summary When the 2021 blackout struck, the finger-pointing began. Electric utilities versus pipeline companies. But finding out exactly what happened is one of the most frustrating parts oil and gas regulation in Texas: getting a clear picture of who did what isn’t really possible. But there’s one man who says he can see exactly what happened. Now he just has to prove it in court. Special thanks to Rachel Adams-Heard, an energy reporter for Bloomberg who appears in this episode.

ATXplained Live is back this April at the Bass Concert Hall. Brand new stories, told live on stage by some of your favorite KUT journalists, along with sound, images and some special guests. If you've never been to ATXplained Live before, it's hard to explain. It's best if you just watch one of the rare videos of a story from a previous show. But you've got to be there for the real experience.

The first time Bernard Snyder remembers seeing Jo Cartwright was at a chicken restaurant. She had a big piece of chicken in front of her. “She’s sitting there and she's looking at this chicken. And she looks so helpless. I mean, it was just hilarious,” Bernard said. It was funny, but he was smitten. “I had to find out who she was," he said. Bernard lives at Westminster, a retirement home near Bull Creek Road in Austin. He moved there with his wife in 2017. He’s 98 years old now.
