But within half an hour the peace had been shattered. German bombers attacked Folkestone and other towns in east Kent killing 97 people – the majority civilians just doing some shopping before the weekend.

New images show how a £20 million greenhouse growing 150 million tomatoes will add to one of the country’s most high-tech farms. Computer-generated images have been released as construction on the vast glasshouse, the seventh to be built at Thanet Earth, near Birchington. The pictures show how the enormous 6.5 hectare structure - equal to the size of nine football pitches - will add to the 45 hectares already growing crops on the site.

A person has been hit by a train prompting services to be cancelled. Emergency services were called to the incident last night near Staplehurst. A person was hit by a train near Staplehurst. Picture: SoutheasternSoutheastern initially said services were affected due to safety inspections along the track between Ashford and Paddock Wood at about 9.50pm. But about 30 minutes later the rail operator confirmed a person had been struck by a train. Police and paramedics were sent to the scene.
