Organisers behind a town’s historic carnival parade have revealed the theme for this year’s event is a legendary former resident. Inspired by actor Peter Cushing - who starred in Doctor Who, Frankenstein and Star Wars during his long on-screen career - Whitstable Carnival is back for its 128th year. Returning to the town on its traditional slot on the first Saturday in August, the festivities will celebrate Mr Cushing, who lived in the town for 35 years until his death in 1994.

Ambitious plans for a brand new £3.5 million state-of-the-art lifeboat station on the Kent coast have been revealed by the RNLI. The new facility in Margate, which will replace the current facility next to the Turner Contemporary, comes as the existing building reaches the end of its life after almost 50 years. There has been a formal lifeboat service station in Margate since 1860 with the current building opening in 1978 following the collapse of Margate Pier.

Setting up a new business, especially a restaurant, it could be argued, is about taking a chance. There’s no guarantee of success in the difficult industry of hospitality and making the right decision at the right time, or the wrong one at the wrong time, could be the difference between success and failure. It would be fair to say that Sekkoya in Canterbury has had its share of ups and downs in the first few years since opening up in 2022.
