Meet Burlington senior Anna Buxton, The Hawk Eye's High School Athlete of the Week

Anna Buxton has found a new role on the Burlington High School girls tennis team this year. As the lone senior, Buxton is trying to be a team leader while at the same time facing the best players from opposing teams as the Grayhounds’ No. 1 singles player. Buxton is 2-2 thus far, and has helped BHS to a 3-1 record heading into Thursday’s Southeast Conference dual at Mount Pleasant. Buxton, who also was a standout volleyball player for the Grayhounds, is having the time of her life as a senior.

Ian Mason was going to be a baseball player. An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, Mason was going follow in the footsteps of his father, Scott, who was an all-state player for Burlington High School who went on to play for Arkansas and Western Illinois at the NCAA Division I level. Something funny happened along the way. Ian Mason, a senior at BHS, fell in love with bowling. And just like that, his college path changed, too.

Kohen Dietzenbach stepped out of his older brother’s shadow and had his moment in the spotlight. After watching his older brother, Notre Dame High School senior Kaiden Dietzenbach, win a state wrestling championship back in February, the younger Dietzenbach had his own moment of glory Tuesday afternoon at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course.

FORT MADISON — On a chilly, windy Tuesday afternoon, conditions weren’t exactly conducive for playing tennis. In turned out to be a perfect day for the Burlington High School boys tennis team. The Grayhounds kept their perfect record intact, sweeping Fort Madison, 9-0, in a Southeast Conference dual at the Fort Madison High School tennis courts. BHS improved to 2-0 on the season, sweeping both duals by identical 9-0 scores. "This is only our second meet of the year,” BHS coach Brian Mumm said.

FORT MADISON -- Kamryn Cox plopped onto the grass on the infield of Richmond Stadium Tuesday evening. The Central Lee High School senior was both exhausted and sore after winning the Class B 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best 1 minute, 19.65 seconds at the 48th annual Timm Lamb Pen City Relays. Cox never felt so good after a grueling, taxing race. Cox ran the 300 hurdles for the first time last Friday at the Lee Calhoun Invitational in Macomb, Illinois.

FORT MADISON -- Lillian Gelsthorpe took her time as she walked off the track following her heat of the 200-meter dash on Tuesday at Richmond Stadium. Gelsthorpe finished seventh in 28.91 seconds at the 48th annual Timm Lamb Pen City Relays. As she tried to catch her breath, the Fort Madison High School senior simultaneously tried to soak in the atmosphere one last time. It was the final run of her final home track meet, and Gelsthorpe wasn't quite ready for it to be over just yet.
College football: West Burlington's Quincy Collins commits to Coe College

Quincy Collins spent much of his senior season of football rewriting the record book for West Burlington-Notre Dame. Collins is ready to tackle a much bigger challenge this fall. Collins, a senior at West Burlington High School, last week committed to continue his football career at Coe College, an NCAA Division III school in Cedar Rapids. The Kohawks have churned out numerous top-level running back, some of whom have gone on to play professionally.
Women's soccer: West Burlington's Raylee Ayer commits to Monmouth College

Raylee Ayer has been playing soccer since second grade. It is a sport the West Burlington High School senior has grown to love more and more with each passing year. So when the opportunity arose to continue playing her favorite sport at the college level, Ayer pounced on the opportunity. Ayer, a center back on the Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville girls soccer team, officially committed last week to play for Monmouth College the next four years. For Ayer, it was an offer too good to pass up.
Pro golf: Charles Jahn cards hole in one in Asher Tour event

Charles Jahn had three hole in ones in his life, all coming while playing with friends. The Sperry native and Mediapolis High School graduate had never got an ace in an actual competitive tournament. That all changed last Thursday. Jahn, 27, playing in the Asher Tour's Chandler Open at Ocotillo Golf Club's Sky Valley Course in Chandler, Arizona, finally got an ace in competition. Playing in the third and final round, Jahn aced the 176-yard, par-3 16th hole using a an 8-iron.
