    Blinking is unwise when Sayville’s Leo Mongiello is on the mat. Any of the senior’s matches can be over in a golden flash. Mongiello pinned Noah Hodge in 21 seconds at 145 pounds in host Sayville’s 36-31 non-league win over East Islip on Wednesday. The pin gave the Golden Flashes a 36-5 lead to clinch the dual meet with five matches remaining. The Franklin & Marshall commit has been wrestling on Sayville’s varsity team since he was in seventh grade and has evolved into the program’s leader.

    Brooke-Lynn Murray’s weight is down, but her performance has been up all season. The Bay Shore junior spent some of last season wrestling at 165 pounds and took third place at 152 pounds at the Long Island championships. Now, Murray is the top-ranked wrestler on Long Island at 138 pounds. Murray has been wrestling for about five years and Bay Shore coach Amber Atkins said her incredible athleticism has helped her navigate different weight classes over the last two years.

    Wilson Quintanilla’s teammates had just rattled off four straight wins to erase a 19-point deficit. With the score tied and the Nassau Division I dual meet title on the line, the gym at Clarke was rocking. Quintanilla, the top ranked wrestler in Nassau at 215 pounds, oozed confidence as he stepped onto the mat. “If I had to put anybody out there at 215 pounds in the county final, Wilson’s the guy I would put out there every time,” Farmingdale coach Artie Weidler said. Quintanilla delivered.

    Gregory Walpole is a Long Beach Marine through and through. The senior has been bringing unmatched energy to high school wrestling mats for four years. Any given bout, you might find him firing up his teammates after an exciting win. When he graduates in the spring, he will be getting ready to bring his energy to the U.S. Marine Corps. Walpole has several family members that have served in the Marines, including a cousin who is actively serving.
