Young divers often learn through watching. How the best competitors act, in and out of the pool, shapes their understanding of the sport. “If you have an angry, rude person on the team who’s a superstar, the kids think that’s how you become a superstar,” said Boston Area Diving coach Joe Chirico.

Heartbreak Hill continues to shake first-timers and veterans alike. The Wellesley scream tunnel is where lots of runners think, “I got this.” And the sights, sounds, and smells continue to stick as they navigate the course. If anyone tells you the whole town was there, they’re exaggerating. The smallest town of the 12 represented at TD Garden for high school hockey’s state championships — North Eastham, home of Nauset High — has about 1,200 residents. So maybe they were all there. But if you were from one of those places, it felt like it, didn’t it? The lower bowl was heavy with feet stomping the floor and fists pounding the seats, full of the oohs and aahs of scoring chances that just missed. It was not an NHL crowd.
