Cost of new county building more than double original estimate

Body It’s back to the drawing board on constructing a new building for county offices after the construction costs turned out to be more than double what was originally estimated. Durant a meeting last week of Bryan County Commissioners Scott Goad, Justin Boone and Brandon Carr, it was revealed that the cost from Mid-Plains Construction to construct a two-story building would be almost $5 million whereas the original estimate was $2,300,000.

‘No Kings’ demonstration held in Durant

Many protesters lined West Main Street at 12th Avenue Saturday afternoon for a “No Kings” demonstration to denounce the policies of President Donald Trump. Organized by the Bryan County Democrats and the Bryan County Federation of Democratic Women, it was one of more than 2,100 demonstrations across the U.S. The protests were held the same day as Trump’s birthday and the military parade in Washington D.C.A handful of counter protesters were across the street from them.
Mote Baseball Diamonds dedicated

The Rick Mote Legacy Baseball Diamonds at the Multi-Sports Complex were dedicated May 30 in his honor. Mote worked 47 years for the city until his recent retirement and during a city council meeting last month, Parks & Recreation Manager Ryan Brewer asked that the baseball fields be named in Mote’s honor and the council agreed.
Magnolia Festival is a success

The 27th Magnolia Festival concluded Saturday night at the Choctaw Event Center and the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased with the turnout and the many volunteers who made the festival happen. The festival, that was May 29-31, has been a tradition since 1997 and it has been held every year except during COVID in 2020.
Durant holds military signing

Durant High School held its first ever military signing. Five Durant High School seniors are enlisting in the military and there was a signing day at the high school last week. Jillian Feltman and Alondra Gamerohavesignedwith the Army National Guard. Braeden Emert has enlisted in the U.S. Army and Anthony Rosarivas has enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. SpencerLeewasappointedto the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Durant Main Street director attends Main Street Day at Capitol

Durant Main Street Executive Director Stephanie Swicker attended Main Street Day last week at the Oklahoma State Capitol and she said this is a day held once a year where directors advocate for the national and state Main Street programs “We were there giving our support and also they acknowledged the Main Streets that have some outstanding re-investments in their districts,” Swicker said.
Students recognized at school board meeting

Students and organizations were recognized for their accomplishments during a meeting last week of the Durant Board of Education. Superintendent Mark Moring introduced HOSA, the first group to be recognized. Instructor Blaklyn Geiger said HOSA once stood for Health Occupation Students of America but when the organization went international the name was changed to Future Hope Professionals while the HOSA name was kept.
J127 Ministry has fundraiser dinner, new director introduced

J127 Ministry had its annual Journey with J fundraiser dinner recently at Community Christian Church and the new executive director was introduced. Connie Pettitt has taken the reins of the ministry that provides housing for young women who have aged out of the foster care system. J127 Ministry, inspired by James 1:27, supports young women transitioning out of foster care with spiritual, emotional, and practical resources.
MC residents graduate from Southeastern

Southeastern spring commencement for baccalaureate degrees was Saturday at Bloomer Sullivan Arena and master’s degrees were presented Friday. The university said the Spring 2025 graduating class resets the record for the largest graduating class in Southeastern’s history, with 877 students graduating – 324 baccalaureate degree recipients, 553 graduate degree recipients, and 47 certificate recipients.
