Thousands of tourism pros came to Rosarito Beach this week for the 49th annual Tianguis Turístico, which means Tourism Market. The event promotes travel in Mexico. Mariachi bands, charros, and pottery throwing were just a few of the celebrations of Mexican culture at Tianguis Turístico, hosted at the new Baja California Center in Playas de Rosarito. This is the first time the conference has been to Baja since it debuted in Acapulco in 1976.

Tourism is a multibillion dollar industry on both sides of the border and Tianguis Turístico — the largest tourism conference in Mexico — is underway in Rosarito this week. That's a big deal for Hugo Torres, who runs the 100-year-old Rosarito Beach Hotel. He said winter business was a little slow, but he is optimistic about the future. "I think this is just temporarily, and we're going to go back to normal by summer," he said. "So I hope that it's not a big recession.

April 30 is International Jazz Day, established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO. While San Diego isn’t hosting official events this year, just across the border, Tijuana is keeping the spirit of jazz alive — with roots deeper than you might think. The first International Jazz Day was held on April 30, 2012. It was celebrated at the United Nations with a star-studded concert.
