Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in response to new cases of bird flu detected in dairy cows on Southern California farms. The virus, also known as Avian Influenza A, has spread to cows in 16 states after it was first detected in Texas and Kansas earlier this year. The state has detected no person-to-person transmission so far, but 34 human cases have been reported in California. Local and federal officials have mobilized to track and contain the spread.

San Diego homeless service providers have activated their inclement weather shelter beds for Wednesday night. Those beds open when temperatures are expected to dip below 45 degrees, or 50 degrees with a 40% chance of rain. The National Weather Service forecast calls for a low around 48 degrees Wednesday night.

A fast-spreading wildfire is threatening structures in Bonsall Friday, prompting evacuation orders. See an interactive map of evacuation areas here. A temporary evacuation point was established at Riverview Church at 4980 Sweetgrass Lane, Bonsall. The fire started around 1 p.m. near Lake Garden Drive, according to a tweet from Cal Fire San Diego.
