Oak Harbor's Haas finds mom to be 'a good alternative' as coach

The varsity career of Karder Haas coincides with her mom's tenure as Oak Harbor head softball coach. The junior shortstop wanted to help Cami Haas make the program her own, with a connection to the past. "I grew up around the program when Coach (Chris) Rawski was here," Haas said. "I was excited to play for Coach Rawski. When I found out my mom was taking over, I was shocked. It's been fun.

Gibsonburg junior catcher Cheyenne Reese was first-team all-state in Division IV last season. Reese struck out only twice in 97 at-bats last season with a .515 average. But she's far from the only girl to pay attention to on the diamond this season. Clyde senior outfielder Ella Howey and junior infielder Vanessa West were first-team in the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division and helped the Fliers earn a share of the league championship.

Oak Harbor senior Tyler Thompson was seventh in the 100 at 11.14 seconds and 200 at 22.60 at state last season. Lakota senior Braxton Quaintance was second in the pole vault at 15 feet and Clyde senior Damarius Chrisman was fourth in the 400 at 48.92. Mason Englund was second in the 110 hurdles at 14.50 and third in the high jump at 6 feet in the Northern Lakes League as a freshman for Fremont Ross. Port Clinton senior Alexis Shelton, Clyde sophomore Daisha Bulger, Margaretta senior Alayna Biehl and Gibsonburg sophomore McKenzie Montgomery are among area girls to watch in track and field this season. Shelton and Shianne Lieske, junior Camille Robbins and graduate Jade Mitchell won the 4x100 at 48.24 seconds and were seventh in the 4x200 at 1:43.31 at the state meet last season. Bulger, sophomore Bree Caudill, junior Gabby Griffin and graduate Cora Liskai were third in the 4x100 at 48.47.
