AbstractDiverse aerobic bacteria use atmospheric hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) as energy sources to support growth and survival. Such trace gas oxidation is recognised as a globally significant process that serves as the main sink in the biogeochemical H2 cycle and sustains microbial biodiversity in oligotrophic ecosystems. However, it is unclear whether archaea can also use atmospheric H2.

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. — Recently, Maj. Gen. Corey Martin, 18th Air Force commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Blount, 18th Air Force command chief, participated in the 68th anniversary of Operation Deep Freeze. With more than 4,200 hours of flight experience including the C-17 Globemaster III, Martin flew the aircraft from Christchurch, New Zealand, to McMurdo Station, Antarctica, in support of the operation.
