To examine the robustness of the designed 5% β limit for high-performance operation in the W7-X stellarator, we undertake nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of pressure-driven instabilities using the m3d-c1 code. Consistent with linear analyses, ideal ballooning instabilities occur as β exceeds 5% in the standard configuration.

The simulation implements the same flux-tube model as Refs. 35 and 38, except that the magnetic shear is turned off. Magnetic shear is usually very important, especially in the pedestal. It also affects FLR stabilization and thus the wave number spectrum. However, the main focus of this work is to demonstrate how the enhanced confinement regimes can arise even in such systems with simplified physics and geometry.

Abstract:In Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), a new ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) antenna will be commissioned during the operational campaign OP2.1. The antenna will have to sustain power loads not only from thermal plasma and radiation but also fast ions. Predictive simulations of fast-ion power loads to the antenna components are therefore important to establish safe operational limits.
