    MANILA, Philippines — Up to 288 bags of trash such as sample ballots, plastic bottles and food packs were collected in the metropolis on election day, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority. The haul was equivalent to 1.44 tons of trash. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reminded all candidates – both winners and losers – to take down their campaign posters.

    MANILA, Philippines —  Malacañang is leaving it up to the regional wage boards to review workers’ salaries amid calls for a legislated wage hike because of rising transport costs. The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines  urged Marcos to certify as urgent the P200 legislated wage hike, citing higher fares for train, jeepney, and buses.

    MANILA, Philippines — Employees who will opt to work today are getting double their regular daily pay, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). April 1 has been declared a holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadan. During regular holidays, the DOLE said employees would be paid 200 percent of their regular salary for the first eight hours of work rendered. Work beyond eight hours will be paid an additional 30 percent of the workers’ rate per hour.

    MANILA, Philippines — Public schools are not allowed to engage in partisan political activities nor campaign for candidates during graduation and moving-up ceremonies, the Department of Education warned. DepEd officials said teaching and non-teaching personnel are prohibited from engaging in electioneering or partisan political activity amid the upcoming midterm polls in May, per Memorandum 27 signed on March 21 by Education Secretary Sonny Angara. Violators could face penalties, the agency said.

    MANILA, Philippines — Suspension of classes must be enforced region-wide when the state weather bureau reports danger-level heat warnings, according to public school teachers in Metro Manila. With many cities failing to suspend classes during Monday’s heatwave warning, relying on the decision of local government units (LGUs) to suspend classes during the summer will not ensure the protection of learners and teachers, the Metro Manila union of the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition said.
