TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday visited a site in Hokkaido where chipmaker Rapidus is building an advanced semiconductor plant, which is seen as a crucial part of bolstering the country's supply chains and economic security. Kishida took the opportunity to drum up support for the project, telling reporters that he was committed to urging the legislature to allocate state-backed funding for the project.

TOKYO -- Honda Motor will team up with taxi companies to roll out self-driving cabs in Japan, supplying vehicles and systems to existing operators in a division of labor that is unusual in the nascent industry. The automaker looks to start putting driverless taxis on Tokyo roads in 2026 in partnership with Teito Motor Transportation and Kokusai Motorcars. Honda is lobbying the government to make the necessary regulatory changes.

TSMC's first chip plant, the first in the country, went operational in February. The world's top contract chip manufacturer plans to bring a second plant, which will produce advanced 6-nanometer chips, online by the end of 2027.

TOKYO -- Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will soon admonish LY Corp., operator of the popular chat app Line and internet portal Yahoo Japan, after the company announced a string of data leaks due to hacks, Nikkei has learned. The ministry will demand that the company strengthen its security with respect to the app and supervision of subcontractors, as well as report on the implementation of measures taken to protect customers' interests.
