    AVENAL, Calif. (KGPE) – A new partnership between Avenal State Prison and CrossFit is giving inmates a second chance. In rural Kings County, barbed wire lines the Avenal State Prison. Inside, time passes slowly. Hours feel like weeks and days feel like years. “When I first got incarcerated, I lost everything. My daughter was on the way to be born. I lost the opportunity to be a father to her out in the streets,” said Freddy Avalon, an inmate. In 2011, Avalos hit rock bottom.

    FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) The City of Fresno has poured millions of dollars into affordable housing and resources for the homeless, yet the population continues to rise, according to a new survey. This week, the Fresno Madera Continuum of Care released preliminary results from the point-in-time count for 2025. Hundreds of volunteers took part in the count in Madera and Fresno counties at the end of January. It is done at least every other year.

    PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KGPE) – The family of Exeter Police Officer Daniel Green is reacting to the guilty verdict of 38-year-old Erika Sandoval. The south valley jury found Sandoval guilty of 1st degree murder for killing her ex-husband 10 years ago. Green’s family thanked jurors, law enforcement, the Tulare District Attorney’s Office, and their family and friends for the support over the last decade. “We, the jury, find the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree,” read the court Clerk.

    PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The jury in the Erika Sandoval trial reached a verdict on Thursday, finding her guilty of the murder of her ex-husband. Sandoval was accused of killing her ex-husband, Exeter Police Officer Daniel Green, in his home in Goshen in 2015. On Thursday, she was found guilty of murder in the first degree. Sandoval had admitted to the killing, but her defense claimed that it was not on purpose, and Green’s death followed years of abuse.

Update: Judge Boccone sentenced Sandoval to the maximum of 50 years to life. Due to a California Law passed In 2018, she will be eligible for a parolee hearing In 12 years (once she turns 50).
