About 60% of college students who are eligible for food assistance benefits don’t receive them, according to a federal study. Federal lawmakers, including Oregon’s Sen. Ron Wyden and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, introduced legislation Tuesday in hopes of increasing that percentage. A key staff person at one of Oregon’s largest public universities — the benefits navigator at Portland State — said the bill is a step in the right direction, though there’s more work to be done.

The start of the school year is right around the corner at Portland State University, with students starting to move into on-campus housing this week. Although the university’s new president, Ann Cudd, officially stepped into her role last month, she gave her first official remarks to the campus community at PSU’s faculty and staff convocation on Wednesday. There she laid out key priorities, including working with the city to revitalize downtown.

The University of Oregon is still figuring out how life might change for student-athletes when it begins its new contract with the Big Ten athletic conference next year. UO announced its move to the Big Ten last month, making this year its last as part of the Pac-12 — the West Coast conference the university has been a member of for more than a century. The university is moving to the Big Ten — a conference made up of schools mostly in the Midwest and Northeast.

Western Oregon University has been serving people who are deaf and hard of hearing across the state for roughly half a century. The public university based in Monmouth is now expanding on that work by offering two new certificates for American Sign Language aimed at professionals who might work with state agencies, and in educational or community settings. The university says the certificates will be the first of their kind in the region.
