Listening live to NPR's announcement of new pope on LAist 89.3 FM, I did a double take on the words: "The new pope is from Chicago."I think in the time I was slow processing that the first U.S.-born head of the Catholic Church was from my hometown, approximately one million memes were being born. From sports to food, Chicagoans projected their own favorites onto Pope Leo XIV, who grew up as Robert Francis Prevost in a suburb just south of the city border.

Nearly 180,000 residents across Los Angeles County have been evacuated and more than 6,000 structures may have been lost as destructive fires continue to burn in Southern California. We still do not have a clear understanding of how many homes have been destroyed. We know that many beloved local businesses have burned down.

Destructive winds not seen for more than a decade fanned multiple fires across the region. There's little sign of relief as strong Santa Anas are expected to last through until at least Friday. An unknown number of structures have been destroyed, and many Southern Californians have been evacuated from their homes.

The Palisades and Eaton fires have so far killed a combined 25 people as firefighters brace for more strong Santa Ana winds through Wednesday and re-up calls to heed evacuation orders. A red flag warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday, bringing with it the potential for fire spread after firefighters made progress in containment over the weekend.
