    North Queensland towns say their economic future is hanging in the balance after further cost blowouts to the proposed $13.9 billion CopperString 2032 transmission line. The new LNP government on Tuesday looked to reorder the construction plan for the 1,100-kilometre high voltage powerline by building the Hughenden to Townsville stage first to recoup costs sooner. The government said it would seek private funding to continue the line through to Mount Isa.

    Mining company Glencore is assessing the future of the Mount Isa copper smelter and Townsville copper refinery. The company has approached the state and federal governments to support the assets, which employ a combined 680 people directly. State MP Robbie Katter says the government should consider an option that gives power over the assets back to the people of Queensland.     One of Australia's largest, most historic copper mines will stop production at the end of July, its owner has announced. Glencore Australia confirmed the last ore will be pulled up from the Mount Isa copper mine on either July 29 or 30 — ending more than a century of continuous operation. Up to 1,200 jobs were expected to be in the firing line when the intended closure was first announced in October 2023, but Glencore has sincerevised it down to 500.

    Heavy rainfall is set to continue in outback Queensland and north Queensland, with major flood warnings for rivers in both regions. There is a severe weather warning for the central west which may affect Longreach, Barcaldine, and Winton. Outback graziers are so far feeling comfortable about flood risk, but sandbags are being made available to Townsville residents.. Townsville residents are being urged to be "alert, but not alarmed" as north Queensland once again prepares for flooding.

    Lockyer Valley residents are cleaning up after the second flood in little more than a year. Some residents wish they could move away and others are grateful the flooding was not worse. The Australian Defence Force has arrive to help repair roads and infrastructure. The main street of Laidley, Queensland is a hive of activity as locals armed with brooms and pressure washers clean away the debris left by floodwater.
