Parts of Queensland's south-west have been hit by sudden rains and flood, with the town of Quilpie recording its wettest day in 15 years. One grazier in the region has recorded more than 350mm of rain in the past 48 hours, and there are fears of large stock losses in the region. Small towns have had properties inundated and roads closed, and the weather bureau says more intense weather is on the way.

In the past week, the total number of cases for melioidosis in Far North Queensland reached record-breaking levels. There have been 87 reported cases in the Cairns and Townsville regions since the start of the year, and 12 people have died. Survivor Debbie-Joy Manttan says people need to take the disease seriously and limit risk factors for exposure.
