North Queenslanders have shared their excitement following the prime minister's commitment to seal an 11km section of the Kennedy Developmental Road, also known as the Hann Highway. The region's leaders say sealing the road will ensure an inland route is available when the major costal route, the Bruce Highway, is damaged or flooded. Lobby group Advance Cairns says it will push for the work to be completed this dry season.

Townsville has recorded its highest monthly rainfall for February, with 991.8mm recorded in the first seven days of the month. Other communities including Rollingstone, Cardwell and Halifax recorded their highest monthly rainfall for any month with totals between 1,277mm and 1,549mm. Localised heavy falls are forecast to increase before easing on Wednesday.

Loading... There's a sugar cane farm in far north Queensland. It feels isolated, private. About five minutes' drive from the farmhouse is a lagoon. These days bullrushes just cling to the edge of the murky brown water. But 60 years ago it was thick with them. Something happened in those bullrushes that is still unanswered today. In fact, the questions it raised ended up becoming so much bigger than the mystery itself.
