John Morris had just finished a round-trip 16-hour car ride to attend a regulatory meeting in Northern California, where he scored an unlikely win for one of the city’s most popular events, Big Bang on the Bay. But there was little time to celebrate. He was weeks behind in securing donations from Naples and Peninsula homeowners, whose donations help pay for the annual fireworks show on July 3 that has become a local tradition celebrated by more than 100,000 people. Fireworks will happen this year.

Vast is performing environmental tests for the International Space Station. Relativity Space just snagged the former head of Google to lead the company and its efforts on the Terran R Rocket. And Rocket Lab is getting ready to launch its 64th medium-lift rocket. The three companies, among others in the aerospace sector, have moved operations to Long Beach in recent years and have added thousands of jobs to the local economy.

A tribute to the man who wrote about Long Beach for 50 yearsTim kept an old photo near his computer at work. A few middle-aged ladies are dressed in cardigans, pearls and party hats, and one of them is gripping the barrel of a liquor bottle like she’s talking with it. The camera caught her mid-word, and it probably wasn’t a nice one. I finally asked, is that a relative? Your mom? No, he said: He just found it on the ground and kept it. “There’s a lot going on in that photo,” he said. I looked closer.
