    A Villager known as “Pickleball Billy” had his bond revoked as the result of an alleged incident at a postal station. William Leonard Hartig, 78, who has become well known as a USA Pickleball ambassador in The Villages, will be held indefinitely without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center for defying a judge’s order.

    When Betty Harmon and her husband purchased their home in The Villages in 2007, the area still had a rural vibe. “When most of us bought our homes, our street ended in a pasture,” Harmon told the Community Development District 3 Board of Supervisors in a meeting Friday at Savannah Center. Over the years, nearby retail has blossomed. Hobby Lobby opened in 2023. A new Costco is being built next door. Harmon lives on Woodridge Drive near the intersection of Southern Trace in the Village of Polo Ridge.

    Officials are offering no sympathy for a Villager facing a more than $50,000 penalty in the sod vs. stone battle. Garry Mang of the La Crescenta Villas owes $39,273 in fines and $14,323 in legal fees as a result of public hearing in June 2023 in which he and several of his neighbors were found in violation of deed compliance rules for having stone, rather than sod, in their landscaping beds.

    A retired law enforcement officer has been chosen to fill a seat on the Community Development District 1 Board of Supervisors. Michael Miller of the Village of Rio Ranchero was appointed Friday morning to the CDD 1 seat which had been vacated by Judy Biebesheimer of the Village of Palo Alto. Miller has represented CDD 1 on the Architectural Review Committee. He will have to resign from his ARC seat to take on the supervisor’s role.

    Kennie Turpening is on a mission to bring improvements to her postal station in The Villages. Turpening spoke out about her concerns about the Santo Domingo Postal Station on Wednesday before the Amenity Authority Committee at Savannah Center. Turpening described the extra high curb at the rear of the postal station. She said the tall curb makes it tougher for older folks to step up onto the concrete to get to their mailbox.
