GLEN ARBOR — Koi Killers, an underwater spearfishing event, is scheduled to take place at Glen Lake on Saturday in an effort to reduce the lake’s population of two invasive species: Japanese koi and common carp. The seven-hour event will be hosted by Michigan Spearfishing Association in cooperation with Glen Lake Association, beginning at 8 a.m. at the DNR Glen Lake Boat Launch.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A silver GMC pickup truck, traveling at a high rate of speed, careened into several vehicles before becoming airborne and crashing into the front of a house off South Airport Road July 18. No one was killed or seriously injured, police said, although the series of crashes that took place at 1 p.m. along a busy road caused a massive traffic jam while the street was being cleared.

SUTTONS BAY — Eight Republican candidates are competing in Leelanau County’s upcoming primary election on Aug. 6. Most of them say they want more economic stability and reduced tax spending. The votes cast in the primary election will decide who will be Leelanau County’s 1st, 2nd and 7th district commissioners; and register of deeds — if they face no competitor in the fall. In the 1st District, Deborah B. Allen is running against Tim McCalley for a seat on the county board.

Jul. 28—SUTTONS BAY — No matter where they live in Leelanau County, voters there will see several millage requests on their primary ballot in August. A total of 13 requests are being posed across the county — and all Leelanau residents, regardless of the township they live in, will see three countywide proposals for road maintenance and repair, senior citizens' services and early childhood services.
