Amid the tragedy and destruction in flood-ravaged North Queensland there has also been joy. Khirralaa Kathleen Greer is the only baby to have been born in Ingham hospital the town flooded. Her birth is welcome news in a town still reeling from the deaths of two women in floodwater this week. Mother Kharma Greer was due to be taken by ambulance to Townsville Hospital to continue to have the birth induced on Saturday morning, but there was a hitch.

A North Queensland mayor suspended on full pay while being investigated by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) is entitled to the latest local government pay rise. Suspended Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson is entitled to a 2.5 per cent pay increase recommended for the Townsville City Council by the Local Government Remuneration Commission in its latest review.

An analysis of the cost of grocery items at Townsville's major supermarkets reveals some items have more than doubled in price since 2010. Economist Colin Dwywer says the cost for 26 basic items in Townsville is $159 at Coles, $156 in Woolworths, and $129 at Aldi. Retail experts say there are signs that food prices are stabilising after surging since 2020.
