An investigation into the sexual assault of a Townsville University Hospital nurse has found some clinical staff view unsafe patient behaviours as "just part of the job". When the nurse was assaulted by a patient, who was known for "verbal and physical aggression", there was no clear procedure for staff to follow. The health service has agreed to update procedures for line managers who are notified of sexual assault and make training mandatory service-wide.

Several North Queensland rivers are flooding and warnings are in place from Tully to Ayr. A woman died today when an SES boat capsized in Ingham and thousands of people have been told to evacuate their homes. More heavy falls are forecast across parts of North Queensland that have already recorded more than 500 millimetres of rain in recent days. Heavy rain is forecast to continue drenching North Queensland for at least another day as thousands flee from floods that have already claimed a life.

An elderly Townsville man has been hospitalised with dengue fever, marking the region's first breakthrough case of the mosquito-borne virus in five years. There have been just two cases of dengue fever in the north Queensland city since 2013 following a successful elimination program. Meanwhile, a middle-aged Townsville man, who had recently travelled to southern Queensland, is also at Townsville University Hospital with Japanese encephalitis.

More than 1,700 residents remain without power after a storm with winds possibly stronger than 90 kilometres an hour fell trees north of Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Debris blocked road access in places between Gympie and Maryborough while some residents captured dramatic vision of trees being uprooted outside rural homes. Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson Patch Clapp said the winds were likely to have been about 70 kilometres an hour.

Homicide detectives have renewed the investigation into the death of 56-year-old man with Down syndrome in North Queensland. Isaac Oar was pronounced dead by emergency services after they found him unresponsive at a residence in Ayr, south of Townsville, in August 2023. A post-mortem examination found Mr Oar was malnourished and weighed 29 kilograms at the time of his death. Homicide detectives say they are investigating how the man was treated in the lead-up to his death.

Townsville business owners are assessing damage caused by ram raids for the second time this week. A business on Ingham Road and another on Flinders Street were hit this morning by what police said were suspected stolen vehicles. On Monday morning, another four businesses were targeted in a similar fashion, allegedly by a convoy of stolen cars. Police are investigating the incidents and asking for anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcams footage, to come forward.
