An investigation into the sexual assault of a Townsville University Hospital nurse has found some clinical staff view unsafe patient behaviours as "just part of the job". When the nurse was assaulted by a patient, who was known for "verbal and physical aggression", there was no clear procedure for staff to follow. The health service has agreed to update procedures for line managers who are notified of sexual assault and make training mandatory service-wide.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred is now a category three system and continues to track south off the north Queensland coast. The cyclone's path beyond Saturday remains unclear but communities from central Queensland south are preparing for the worst. Residents and tourists at Great Keppel Island, near Rockhampton, will evacuate today, while in Bundaberg SES volunteers are mobilising.

Several North Queensland rivers are flooding and warnings are in place from Tully to Ayr. A woman died today when an SES boat capsized in Ingham and thousands of people have been told to evacuate their homes. More heavy falls are forecast across parts of North Queensland that have already recorded more than 500 millimetres of rain in recent days. Heavy rain is forecast to continue drenching North Queensland for at least another day as thousands flee from floods that have already claimed a life.
