Indris, the largest living lemurs of Madagascar, are classified as ‘Critically Endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The species is indeed facing a population decline, with significant habitat destruction and fragmentation primarily due to slash-and-burn agriculture, logging, and fuelwood gathering. Indris are folivorous, arboreal primates that are considered immature leaf specialists.
