Aguilar, 30, is now a medical doctor and now must pass the final test to work in surgery and internal medicine. “I had an idea of what I wanted to pursue,” Aguilar told the Imperial Valley Press.

EL CENTRO — For the longest time, Imperial County residents needing intensive help for substance abuse addiction would have to go to another location in the state for help. Imperial County Behavioral Health Services Director Leticia Plancarte-Garcia said that will be changing. The State Department of Health Services provided a $17.2 million grant for a 1.9-acre substance abuse facility, right outside the El Centro city limits on county property.

EL CENTRO — The El Centro City Council unanimously extended its moratorium on tobacco and smoke shops in the city. Previously, the city was operating under a 45-day moratorium, but Community Development Director Angel Hernandez proposed extending it to April 7, 2026. Under the moratorium, existing smoke shops could still be open, but future ones would not be allowed.

The Columbia City Council Monday night voted 4-3 to not bring back the Henderson Branch Sewer Project for a first read on July 16. Mayor Brian Treece and councilors Ian Thomas, karl Skala and Betsy Peters voted against Second Ward Councilman Mike Trapp’s motion.
