INTRODUCTION Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic granulomatous vasculitis that affects people over the age of 50.1 Because of the risk of permanent vision loss caused by ischemic damage to the ophthalmic vasculature, GCA is a medical emergency that requires rapid recognition and treatment with high-dose steroids.
